About the Role

The Head of Technical Underwriting leads the operational teams which support profitable growth, manage the operational risk appetite, and ensure regulatory compliance. Key duties include enhancing underwriting performance, developing underwriter capability, providing best in class service support and demonstrating all activities completed in line with governance requirements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Drive capability development and create a high-performance culture of technical proficiency and customer focus across business units
  • Support Delivery of Financial targets, with underwriting activity undertaken in a way that supports profitability and growth objectives
  • Be the senior referral point on risk acceptance across all lines. Be visible and available to support colleagues on technical queries.
  • Oversee the day-to-day performance, technical standards, and quality control of the underwriting operational teams. Ensure outcomes are measurable and reported.
  • Foster continuous communication between the sales and underwriting teams to ensure that their combined effectiveness is optimised.
  • Lead the charge in underwriting operational excellence in process efficiency and value contribution to business objectives using continuous improvement mindset.
  • Represent and promote own function at senior management level and cross functional forums.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in adherence with the FBD Underwriting policy, maintaining a robust control framework protecting FBD through close monitoring of business quality.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and is required to hold a professional Insurance qualification such as Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

  • Enthusiasm, drive and vision and an attitude for making things possible.
  • Outstanding numerical, analytical and organisational skills as well as first class communication skills.
  • A collegiate approach and the ability to work effectively with others to ensure the realisation of FBD’s goals.
  • Experience in general insurance underwriting with expert understanding of Underwriting processes and principles across Motor, Property and general liability classes of business.
  • Sound knowledge of the insurance industry, with a proven track record in managing operational teams at a senior level.
